Learning Support

Introduction

We support students with additional support needs. If you have received support at school or if you have additional support needs and have told us this on your application, then a member of our team will get in touch with you to arrange a meeting to discuss your individual needs. We will then contact your lecturers to let them know of the support that you need on your course.

How can we help?

The support that we can offer if you have an additional support need is personal to you. It may be that you need additional time for assessments or exams, for example, or you may need your lecturers to know that you might need to take a break from class because of a medical condition. This will all be discussed during your meeting with a member of our team and will form part of your Personal Learning Support Plan, or PLSP.

Where to find us?

We have a learning support team located on each campus. But, if you have told us that you have an additional support need on your application, then we will contact you! If you are not sure if you have an additional support need, or you have forgotten if you have already told us on your application then you can email learning.support@edinburghcollege.ac.uk

If you are diagnosed with an additional support need during your course that you would like to tell us about, you can email us at the address above and we will get in touch to discuss what support you may need.

What is Disabled Student Allowance

Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) is a specific fund for students with disability or additional support needs who are studying a higher education course.

Am I eligible?

If you are studying an HNC or HND course, and are able to provide evidence of your additional support need or disability, then you may be able to apply.

You also need to have been resident in the UK for at lesat 3 years before the start of your course. Your Learning Support Advisor will support you to make an application.

Most full-time students are not eligible to claim housing benefit, however housing benefit may be available to the following groups:

What help could I get?

The support will help by providing you with support for hardware, software, human support (such as notetaker) and any other equipment that support your disability in your studies.

Any software, equipment, or tutoring is not covered by Disabled Students Allowance because all students would benefit from this.

How do I get DSA funding?

Your Learning Support Adviser will help you to apply for Disabled Students Allowance

DSA funding is allocated each academic year. If you are continuing to a second year of your course, please speak to your Learning Support Adviser in summer about making new DSA application.
