Student Safety

Staying Safe with Us

At Edinburgh College, we are dedicated to offering you a safe, supportive space where you can thrive and grow. Your safety is our shared responsibility, and we rely on your cooperation with our staff and awareness of your surroundings to ensure a positive environment for all.

Keeping Our Young and At-Risk Students Safe

We pay special attention to the safety of students under 18 and adults who may be at risk. If you're feeling vulnerable or experiencing abuse or exploitation, our Safe Guarding Offices are here for you. Reach out to them through Student Services or your Student Support Officers, Learning Development Tutors, or Lecturers.

First Aid Assistance

Every area of our college has qualified First Aiders ready to assist if you have an accident. Please inform a member of staff or visit the main reception desk for help.

Substance Rules

Please note that the possession or use of illegal drugs will lead to immediate suspension and may be reported to the police. To learn more about the risks associated with drug use, feel free to consult Student Services.

No Gambling

Please remember that gambling is not permitted within the college.

Recreational Activities

Please be aware that participating in unsupervised games during breaks or outside college hours is at your own risk. Ball games should only be played in the Sports Hall under the supervision of teaching staff.

Respect and Responsibility

We encourage all students to act responsibly and show respect for people, property, and equipment. Let's cultivate an environment where everyone is treated as they would wish to be.

Your Belongings

Although our college is a bustling place, we can't be responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property. We recommend you not bring valuables to college and make sure you have adequate insurance coverage for all your belongings.

Health & Safety - Your Role

We aim to ensure a safe and healthy college environment for everyone. As part of this commitment, we provide necessary health and safety information and training. You are expected to work safely, report accidents or hazards, and cooperate to maintain a safe workspace.

Always adhere to staff safety instructions, report any hazards or accidents, know what to do during an emergency evacuation, avoid smoking except in designated areas, and wear required protective equipment. If you're unsure about any task or activity, always seek advice from a staff member.

In Case of Fire

In the event of a fire, raise the alarm by pressing the nearest red break glass point, evacuate the building immediately, and don't attempt to extinguish the fire. If you find a suspicious package, notify a staff member right away.

Emergency Evacuation

Upon hearing an alarm, follow the green directional signs to the nearest exit and assemble at the designated point. If you require special evacuation assistance due to disability, please let us know so we can work on a personal evacuation plan for you.

Reporting Accidents

If you're involved in or witness an accident, inform a staff member right away. They will arrange for a First Aider to assist you and complete an accident report form.

Protective Equipment

Certain courses may require personal protective equipment. Follow instructions on using and storing equipment and report any loss or damage to your Course Tutor right away.

Smoking Rules

Smoking is permitted only in designated outdoor areas and is prohibited within the college buildings or campus.

Special Safety Measures for New or Expectant Mothers

If you're pregnant, a new mother, or a nursing mother, notify your Learning Development Tutor or Student Services as soon as possible. We'll conduct a risk assessment to ensure your safety.
