Meet your Active Campus coordinator
There’s no better way to get stuck into life at Edinburgh College than getting involved with some of the many clubs and activities on offer. We’ve caught up with Xsara Murray, the College’s Active Campus coordinator, to give you all the essential information you’ll need to take part.
Hi Xsara! Can you tell us a little bit about what an Active Campus coordinator does?
“Sure! The Active Campus coordinator is responsible for getting students and staff involved with sports and physical exercise at the College, as well as out in the wider community. I do that through helping students set up their own social sports clubs, helping them communicate with their lecturers, and helping them speak to the student union about what sort of sports and activities they’d like to see on offer.”
And what’s the sales pitch for students then, why should they get involved?
“If you’re new to the College, it’s a great way to meet people, including people outside of your course, and get a bit of a feel for the wider College community. It’s a different environment, and it’s always fun and relaxed. Staff are involved too, so you’ll get to meet lecturers from other departments, people who could potentially support and help you in future, and it just helps you build your own confidence too.”
I know it sometimes takes a while for the whole range of sports and activities to be finalised, but can you give us an idea of what’s been on offer in previous years?
“Sometimes we don’t know until the start of the year, because we really like to let the students themselves be involved with helping to design the timetable, but last year was brilliant. We had a really varied mix, we had basketball, football, racket sports so badminton, table tennis, a bit of pickleball.”
And just finally, how do students go about getting involved?
“At each campus you’ll see big Active Campus posters and boards with more information, and each club will have a poster with a QR code that you can scan and sign up that way too. Please feel free to reach out to me directly for more information too, you can message me on Teams, and I’m always around during introductions and floating around classes, so just come up and say hello.”
